Mei Kusakabe is one of the heroines in My Neighbor Totoro. She is thought to be around four years old.
The film is centered mainly around Mei and her older sister, Satsuki who move to a new house with their father, to be close to the hospital their mother is ill in. The story then follows their adventures. Their adventures mainly include a forest spirit named Totoro.
Personality[]
Mei is generally friendly, playful and fun-loving young girl. She's adoring of her older sister and sometimes quite stubborn. This shows through when she is taken to Satsuki's school as she kept crying until Grandma took her there.
Appearance[]
Mei has light brown hair, typically kept in pigtails and slight tan skin. Her eyes are dark and her hair is parted in the middle with a few wispy strands. She is usually seen wearing a short pink dress, white bloomer and what looks like a straw hat if she is outdoors. She is also quite short. She is seen towards the end of the movie holding a ear of corn and it is about the size of her.
Relationships[]
Satsuki Kusakabe[]
Mei and her preteen sister get on incredibly well. Mei looks up to Satsuki and is often seen mimicking her. Satsuki generally looks after Mei and acts as a role model. Throughout the film they maintain a strong sisterly relationship and quickly make up after having a falling out with each other.
Totoro[]
Mei is the first human to meet Totoro, and they seem to get along well. Mei finds him amusing and he tolerates her sitting on his belly as he
sleeps. She falls asleep on him and he helps her numerous times throughout the film. The most important time being when he helps Satsuki find her when she gets lost on the way to the hospital.

Mei also appeared in the short film, Mei and the Kittenbus.

- Mei Kusakabe is similar to Dorie Goodwyn from The New Kids on the Block.
