Susuwatari are also known as Sootsprites. They are black soots that wander round empty houses and leave dirt and dust in their wake. They live there and are rarely seen, when they are seen they'll try to get away as fast as they can, but if they think the people are good, they'll leave the house for them.

Appearance

Susuwatari are described to be tennis ball sized, black, fuzzy sprites with two large eyes, and long thin legs.

Appearances In The Film

Susuwatari appear at the beginning of the film, this is when Satsuki, Mei, and Tatsuo Kusakabe first move into their new house. Susuwatari are everywhere and move quickly from the light into the darkness, which they like. Mei tries to catch some, but despite this, they agree that the Kusakabe family  is good and they leave to another abandoned area.

Extra Appearances

Susuwatari also appear in Spirited Away, another Studio Ghibli film, also directed by Hayao Miyazaki. They're known for eating multi-coloured stars (which are, presumably, sweets) and carrying coal.
